The Toyota Corolla, My All-time Favorite Car then and Now

Although they have gotten some bad press in the last several months, my favorite car continues to be the Toyota Corolla. Yes I enjoy exotic cars and have sent many of my friends on gift days driving experiences, but you can't beat the Corolla for a general purpose car.

In the mid 1970's I owned one and, as a student always low on cash, this car was the ideal way to get around economically. The stick shift was also fun to drive and there was very little maintenance. I prided myself on doing my own oil and filter changes and the smallness of everything in the car made that and other jobs easy. But most of all it was the car's reliability that impressed me. It was a pleasure to get in every morning and know that when I turned the key, the car would start - and run. And it did for over ten years. When I sold that car, it was as if I had lost a friend. I got away from Corollas, but not Toyotas, for three decades. When I bought another one, I was pleased to find that, although it had gotten bigger and now I had an automatic transmission, the car was as much fun to drive as it always was.
